                                                 The Sanderson/Fosk Manifesto

First there were games, then there were frag movies of people playing games.   After a while, some of the players wondered if they could create scenes which extended beyond traditional gameplay. Players either modded the game, or manipulated the character movements to record stories which took the action outside the parameters originally designed by the game creators. These new movies were called Machinima.

A community developed and new satellite communities emerged, often gathered around a particular game engine.  Time passed, and software began to emerge which bypassed the usual game route, but used the underlying technology to manufacture movie making tools. This diversified the machinima community even further, the new tools and license freedom attracted non game playing creators who were looking for a more spontaneous way to animate..

The general public, if they know of machinima at all, will consider it to be either games based, centred around young male humour, or used to make dance videos to accompany the latest pop hits.  The Fallopian site creators believe that drama, and art based machinima have a role to play both in the future of machinima, and in the emerging digital world.

In the early days of Hollywood, when films were relatively cheap to create, movies appeared within an explosion of creativity.  Now an established industry, the balance-sheets no longer allow that kind of free experimentation.   The digital revolution puts movie makers on a new footing.  Like the movie pioneers, machinimators have no shareholders to worry about, no cost but a bruised ego if an idea turns out to be unworkable.

At Fallopian we commit to promoting the current independent animator, to showcasing those films which concentrate on the art of machinima, pieces which innovate, and do not try to copy styles and forms made familiar by mass media, film-makers who actively seek their own voice, directors who explore emotion and style, who strive for something different.

Welcome to Fallopia!
